Halloween time only meant one thing to me growing up: candy. And lots of it. Ask Katie and Paula Pace and they would say the same thing. Because they lived on a sheep farm and not a great neighborhood for trick or treating they would come and trick or treat with us. Some specific memories I have are:
1) the fact that we rarely had our costumes planned until about 30 minutes before we left for candy. Notable costumes were a Hobo and a Pilgrim - mostly because they were easy and/or we had them left from school plays and such. (Why did we have so many pilgrim outfits, who knows?)
2) Brother and Sister Pace would also come over with Katie and Paula and, I guess, sit and visit with the grownups. We NEVER had a grownup come with us. Ever, otherwise we would not have been able to --
3) Cut through every yard possible! So much so that we would wait on the stoop til the door was shut and take off through the front lawn. We hardly used walkways and our neighborhood didn't have sidewalks. The only problem was on one rainy Halloween Molly ran through a culvert (ditch) that was flooded. We still laugh about that.
4) When we came home we would race to our parents who would have to inspect each piece of candy before the eating and trading could begin. That is when the candy tax began too. We usually had to throw out the caramel popcorn balls wrapped in cellophane that an old lady neighbor gave us - even though I think we knew her - you could not risk any unwrapped or homemade candy because there might be drugs or needles in it! Yes, they were scaring us back then too. Sigh
